Uganda’s national boxing team, the Bombers, has intensified preparations ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games boxing competition, scheduled to take place in Scotland from July 23 to August 2.

The team has been in residential camp for the last two months, undergoing rigorous training focused on fitness, technical development, discipline, and tactical execution as they prepare to represent the nation on one of the biggest international sporting stages.

Uganda will be represented by a select squad of six elite boxers who emerged from a demanding qualification and selection process. The team includes Gorilla Ojok in the middleweight division, Aziz Ringo in the heavyweight category, Emily Nakalema in the women's welterweight division, Angel Katusabe in the women's lightweight class, and Kemis Ibrahim in the lightweight division, among other representatives selected for the championship.

According to Uganda Boxing Federation President Moses Muhangi, the current Bombers squad is the strongest team Uganda has assembled for a Commonwealth Games campaign in recent years.

“This is the best team Uganda has ever had for the Commonwealth Games. These boxers passed through a very tough selection criterion to earn their places. They are the best in their respective weight divisions, and I believe no one can beat them in Uganda in their weight classes,” Muhangi stated.

The federation president emphasized that the athletes have earned their positions through consistent performances and dedication, making them worthy ambassadors of Ugandan boxing.

National team head coach Twaib Mayanja is equally optimistic about the team's chances.

“This time around, we are not just going to participate. We are going to bring medals because the boxers are ready to perform. They have trained hard, remained disciplined, and are hungry for success,” Mayanja said.

Uganda's Commonwealth Boxing Legacy

Uganda has a rich history in Commonwealth boxing, producing some of Africa's finest fighters over the decades. The country has consistently used the Commonwealth Games as a platform to showcase its boxing talent, with several Ugandan fighters winning medals and earning international recognition.

The Bombers have traditionally been among Uganda's most successful national teams at major multi-sport events, contributing significantly to the country's medal tally. The Scotland campaign also carries significant importance for Muhangi's new term as president of the Uganda Boxing Federation.

A successful Commonwealth Games outing would validate the federation's recent reforms, talent identification programs, and investment in national team preparations. It would also strengthen confidence among stakeholders, sponsors, government agencies, and the boxing fraternity regarding the direction of Ugandan boxing under his leadership.
